Lake Fairways Softball Update

By: Thud Kline

By Ray Durbin

On Monday February 25 the opponent was Pine Lakes.  Lake Fairways scored 2 in the 2nd and Pine Lakes scored 1 in each the 2nd and 3rd.  Pine Lakes added 2 in the 4th for a 4 to 2 lead.  Lake Fairways scored 2 in the 5th to tie the game at 4.  Lake Fairways offense woke up in the 6th inning for 4 runs and the final score of 8 to 4 for a Lake Fairways victory.  Big offense came from Meat Burns getting a triple and Ragin Benintendi getting an inside the park home run.  Wolf McMeel was 3 for 3, while 7 players had 2 hits each (Rifle, Sarge, Preacher, Hammer, Ribbit, Meat and Ragin).  Poopsie Albee had 5 strike outs from the pitching mound.

On Wednesday Feb 27 Buccaneer was the foe.  Lake Fairways scored 4 in the first, 5 in the 2nd and 1 in the third.  Buccaneer scored 5 in the 4th for a final score of 10 to 5 in favor of Lake Fairways.  The offense was led by three players with 2 hits each (Ace, Sarge & Preacher).  Tubbs, Meat and Ragin made great catches in the out-field.  Smooth Dabbs made a hard, running catch from 2ndbase towards home plate on a short pop up.  Poopsie Albee pitched 6 scoreless innings and allowed zero earned runs.

On Monday March 4 the opponent was Del Tura.  Lake Fairways opened the scoring with 1 run in the top of the first inning and Del Tura did not score.  LF should have called the game there.  Del Tura went on to score 5 in the 2nd, 4 in the 3rd and 5 in the 4th while LF could only muster 3 in the 4th for a 14 to 4 deficit.  DT scored 2 more in the bottom of the 6th and LF got 3 in the top of the 7th for a final score of Del Tura 16 and Lake Fairways 7.  The offense was led by 5 players with 2 hits each (Rifle Kelly, Meat Burns, Ace Durbin, Sarge Kostera and Ribbit Beneteau.)

On Wednesday March 6 the offenses started slow with LF opening the scoring in the 3rd inning with 3 runs and getting 1 more for a 4 to 0 lead going into the 5th.  Tara Woods scored 1 in the top of the 5th and the wheels came off the LF defense giving up 5 runs in the top of the 6th.  With Tara Woods ahead 6 to 4 in the bottom of the 6th, LF scored 2 runs to tie the game.  The defense came back to life in the 7th holding Tara Woods to no runs, setting the stage for Lake Fairways.  Rifle Kelly gets a 2 out, game winning hit in the bottom of the 7thinning scoring Ragin Benintende from 2nd base.  The final was Lake Fairways 7 and Tara Woods 6 after 7 innings of very intense softball.

Ribbit Beneteau, playing short stop, had the defensive high light of the game when he fielded a ground ball near 2nd base, taking 3 steps to 2nd and making the throw to Thumper Higgins for a big double play.

Leading the offense with 3 hits each was Sarge Kostera and Thumper Higgins followed by Rifle Kelly at 2 hits.

On Monday March 11, the opponent was Old Bridge.  The offenses started fast.  LF scoring 5 runs in each the 1st, 2nd and 3rd innings, while OB scored 3, 3 and 1 for a 15 to 7 score by the end of the 3rd inning.  Then the LF defense took over, holding Old Bridge to zero for the rest of the game.  Lake Fairways scored 5 in the 5th and 4 in the 6th for a final score of 24 to 7 in favor of LF.

The offense had 2 batters with 3 hits each (Ace Durbin & Thumper Higgins).  There were 9 players with 2 hits each, (Meat, Sarge, Wolf, Tubs, Preacher, Ribbit, Road Runner, Ragin and Poopsie).

On Wednesday March 13, Heron’s Glen was ready for the upset minded Lake Fairways.  HG started off fast and never looked back.  The final score was HG 18 and LF 4.  Ribbit Beneteau led the miniscule offense with 2 hits.  Tubbs Miller, playing shortstop, made a nice running catch by the third base fence.

Please remember, we are always looking for players to add to our team.  Contact Tom Dabbs at 248 252-663 for more information.  A special Thank You to our own “Cookie Lady”.
